Questions for candidates

A. Apollonius Cordus presented the following questions:

First, a question for the candidates for consul: you've both explained what you would like to promote and encourage within Nova Roma, but could you explain why you feel you need to be consul in order to do this and what you hope to do which you will not be able to do if you are not elected?

My vision of the Consulship is one of leadership, and action. The Consuls should be those individuals that guide Nova Roma towards meeting the goals of our organization. They should be the ones who propel Nova Roma forward. Surely, it is possible to provide a positive voice for growth, and to provide leadership without being Consul. However, it is very important role of the Consul to lead, to provide the necessary leadership to motivate the citizenry to new levels of participation, and citizenship. Nova Roma is an organization with an unlimited potential. I believe it takes dynamic leadership to tap into this potential. What makes Nova Roma great is the people involved within it, and I believe a good Consul should help to bring the people together.

I will support my election platform whether or not I am elected. I can have some influence over these goals, even if un-elected. However, if elected Consul it becomes easier to ensure the priorities of Nova Roma are implemented, because the responsibility and duty to do so will rest upon my shoulders [as well as the shoulders of the other Consul elected]. If elected Consul my success or failure will depend upon how successfully I developed the goals and priorities of Nova Roma.

And finally, for all candidates, my favourite question: are you now or have you ever been a member of any political party, alliance, faction, or other group with political goals within our replublic?

I am a former member of the "Boni." I am in full agreement with what Gaius Minucius Hadrianus Felix recently stated, " My personal feeling (based on my own experiences) is that such associations have the unfortunate tendency to promote the worst sort of personal politics which in my view have become the bane of our organization." I currently belong to no political faction.

ENDORSEMENT - Julilla Sempronia Magna

Salvete,

I attempted to endorse Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus' candidacy last week, but I have been labouring on an ancient laptop since my desk unit was taken ill, and the ether must have consumed it.

When Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus was a Plebeian, I had the priviledge of working with him as Tribune. I found Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus a most thoughtful, pious and ethical individual. He faced difficult issues squarely and never allowed passion to prevent him from doing what he knew was the right course of action.

I have the highest admiration for Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus and am convinced he will serve Nova Roma to the very best of his abilities.

valete,

Propraetrix, Provincia America Boreoccidentalis

ENDORSEMENT - Gaius Equitius Cato

I would like to offer my endorsement for Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus as consul. He an I have had a very interesting (in the Chinese sense of the word) relationship over the past couple of years, and in fact right now I'm not sure if we're actually speaking to one another :-) but he really is one of the most dedicated and hard-working citizens in the Republic. When we have disagreed, we have done so overwhelmingly in a measured, reasonable way; when we have let our tempers flare, it has still been with a sense of duty to the Republic very much in evidence. I believe that he truly is devoted to the health, well-being, and growth of the Republic, and the benefits of having him as consul --- giving him the opportunity to use the energy, strength of character, and vision that he has for our benefit, the benefit of the Republic --- far FAR outweigh any other considerations. I think we will make an excellent consul, and will make us proud to have him as one.

ENDORSEMENT - F. Galerius Aurelianus

F. Galerius Aurelianus flamen Cerealis to the Senate and People of Nova Roma.

I whole-heartedly endorse the candidacy of G. Fabius Buteo Modianus for consul of Nova Roma. I truly believe that he will be an asset to our organization, an excellent magistrate, and will further our goals in the real world. He and I are brothers in the Religio and he has been one of the foremost advocates and teachers of our faith and practice. Few Nova Romans have demonstrated so well the virtues of firmitas, auctoritas, humanitas, and gravitas than G. Fabius Buteo Modianus. I believe that Dii Immortales will be well-honored and the public rites faithfully celebrated with Modianus as Consul.

Although he has been involved in many debates and discussions, some of which were very heated, he has remained dedicated to the ideals of Nova Roma and has never waivered in his continued support of our organization. I have always found him to be a good and faithful citizen even when we have had disagreements but he has never become profane or insulting as so many others are want to be.

Please read his list of priorities and goals carefully and email him to ask questions, as he has always been very quick to respond to those truly interested in his plans, goals, and beliefs. While most of our consuls have been good men, I believe that G. Fabius Buteo Modianus, if elected, will be measured among the very best. The public goals and virtues of pietas, salus, securitas, and fides will find a strong champion in this man. I encourage all of my fellow Plebs to join their hands and voices with mine in support of this most worthy and honorable candidate--Modianus for Consul.

Valete.

I feel no hesitation whatsoever in lending my support to C. Fabius Buteo Modianus for the office of Consul.

C. Minucius Hadrianus Felix Quiritibus S.P.D.

Salvete.

I would like to offer my full and wholehearted endorsement of Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus for the office of Consul. I have had many opportunities to deal with Gaius Fabius both within and outside of Nova Roma and I have always found him to be a highly intelligent, motivated and thoroughly honorable individual who exemplifies those uniquely Roman ideals of Dignitas and Pietas. He has also shown himself to be a uniter during times when division and political acrimony were the norm within Nova Roma. He is exactly the sort of leader Nova Roma needs and deserves.

Valete bene,

Gaius Minucius Hadrianus Felix
Pontifex

ENDORSEMENT - Marca Hortensia Maior

M. Hortensia Quiritibus spd;

I am here to give my full support to Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus candidature for Consul. I think he will be great. Why?

1. He has maturity and understanding - A Uniter

He & I argued a lot;-) But after talking we found out our anger was due to our frustration over the Religio. I called him on the phone and we really spoke. Sure he convened the CP and rid me of my 'nefas' status. You know what? If someone whom I insulted on the ML a lot, is big enough to forgive me & then help me, he has the character to be a great consul. It shows maturity and understanding.

2. He is an active member of the Religio & totally tolerant. - Tolerant

The religio group has really prospered since he is there helping and pontiffs Metellus and Graecus too & he does real life events. But notice there is no anger on the ML. No Christian, atheist, agnostic, Jewish or other civis feels the least bit threatened by Gaius Buteo Modianus's activism. This is a great example & good for Nova Roma in every way.

3. He is an active real world organizer for Nova Roma - Proven Activist for Nova Roma

Gaius Buteo Modianus is not an internet Consul. He knows how to organize, more importantly he does it. He can help our organization expand in the most important way - face to face meeetings. I've done my share of organizing as Propraetrix of Hibernia & now in America Austrorientalis;yes it is hard. So I admire someone who walks the walk.

So Quirites these are my reasons for supporting the candidature of Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus. He will represent all of Nova Roma and make our organization grow & honour the Gods. I can't think of
better reasons to run for Consul.

ENDORSEMENT - Quintus Suetonius Paulinus

Salvete citizens Of Nova Roma,

I would like to take this opportunity to voice my support for Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus' bid for Consul. I am pleased with his well planned agenda he has listed below very clearly and which addresses the concerns of the various departments that need immediate attention. I wish to concentrate here on the religio.

I believe this year is just the right time to have a person in the top job who is a priest of the religio. Though I am not a practioner of the religio, I am fully aware that it was interest in the Religio Romano that got Nova Roma going in the first place and I would not be here with out that. Furthermore I am well aware that we have many citizens who are religio practitioners who feel that this institution has been sitting on the back burner for too long and they are still with us but in the shadows of late. I see that Pontifex Fabius Buteo would certainly give the religio a boost it needs thereby raising the morale and bridging gaps between our citizens.

For none practitoners, I can attest to the fact that Gaius Fabius Buteo is extremely well versed and sensitive in regards other theologies. Whenever I needed his advice, he was always there and reliable at getting back to my questions or concerns. Should I run for higher offices in future, you can be sure I will have Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus at my side as religio advisor. He has also withstood criticism and flack like a true Roman!

To me, Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus is the man of the hour who can certainly bridge this gap and set things right. Lets not allow this great opportunity to pass us by!

Regards,

Quintus Suetonius Paulinus

ENDORSEMENT - Caeso Fabius Buteo Quintilianus

Salvete Quirites!

Between my mothers sickbed and my work I was happy to read this platform. I am thrilled to see Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus supporting the priorities that was approved during the Consulship of Gnaeus Equitius Marinus and Gnaeus Salvius Astur.

To me all these points are dear and important. It is time for the Religio to become a visible force in the service of the Gods and the People. To work for the financial strength of Nova Roma has always been important to me both as a Senator and Consul. Recruitment has been important for me ever since we planned such during my Consulship. "Sustaining support of existing projects" is very important to me, especially as I had the honor to start the Magna Mater Project. Ever since I saw the lack of personal contact and the People accepted my "Lex Fabia de Oppidis et Municipiis" the work for the local groups are close to my heart. Yes Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus couldn't have choosen a better approach as candidate for the Consulship. The last point also is an important one as who has been "Encouraging citizens to become involved in the work of government" more than I have done by creating the first magistratical staffs, the Cohortes a way to organize the support of a magistrate and to let citizens "learn the ropes".

This is a splendid platform for the Consulship of Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus and it doesn't become any less important as it is supported by the Senate. Please support the candidacy for the Consulship of Gaius Fabius Buteo Modianus, he will make a excellent Consul in times when Nova Roma will have to adjust to new circumstances. He has an eye for what is important and how to deal with these issues.

Declaration of candidacy for Consul

During the Consulship of Gnaeus Equitius Marinus and Gnaeus Salvius Astur a Senatus Consultum was approved by the senate that set priorities for Nova Roma in order of precedence. If elected Consul I would continue in the tradition established by these former consuls, and set these priorities as my own.

The priorities are listed below in, with an explanation as to how I plan on supporting these priorities.

The Religio Romana; it's promotion, preservation, protection, and diffusion throughout the communities of Nova Roma.

An extremely important institution of Nova Roma is the Religio Romana. As Consul, and as a Pontifex, I will work to encourage the Collegium Pontificum to reform itself. I believe that reform is necessary within the Collegium Pontificum. Establish clear expectations of all priests in Nova Roma; from Sacerdos to Pontifex Maximus. Make sure the obligations of the priesthood are fulfilled, and ensure that offerings are made by our priests on behalf of the Senate, and People of Nova Roma on a regular basis. The blessings of the Gods of Rome are essential for the survival of our Republic. We, as a Republic, need to make the Religio Romana a priority, while still being mindful of the need for tolerance and understanding. For those who embrace the Gods of Rome we need to offer assistance in "promoting, preserving, and protecting" the divine cults. For those who do not embrace the Gods of Rome, but who respect those who do, we need to offer tolerance and acceptance as fellow citizens.

Establishment of a Nova Roma Endowment and its long term growth.

Monetary resources are essential to the long term survival of any organization. The future of Nova Roma rests on decisions that are made now, and the foundation that is laid today may grow into what we all hope, and envision. With a well established endowment fund, the future of Nova Roma can be secured. Through a process of continued, and systematic commitment to the financial well being of Nova Roma our future will be secured. If a fund is not already created, I will urge the senate to approve of one and make sure it is maintained. A fund like this also needs more tax paying citizens. A positive, and active Nova Roma means more tax payers.

Sustaining support of existing projects, including the publication of the Eagle, the Aedilian Fund for the Magna Mater Project, the Scholarship Fund, and the Land Fund.

Maintaining the traditions that have been started by others are important, because they build up our history. The continuance of existing programs is important because it shows that we are committed to the endeavors that we start. If elected Consul I would support the projects of me predecessors with enthusiasm. This includes, but is not limited to, the Magna Mater project.

Outreach, recruitment and retention of citizens, including fostering interest in the activities of the Sodalities.

I believe the Sodalities are important to Nova Roma because people join Nova Roma for different reasons, and a strong body of Sodalities will make Nova Roma stronger. Nova Roma should be able to be all things Roman to all people interested in things Roman.

Additionally, I support the GO Roman project of the Sodalitas Egressus, and if elected as Consul will encourage education of provincial governors so they can understand how the Go Roman project can help build-up their province. I will also encourage a grass roots recruitment and retention program, involving provincial governors and their administrations.

Promotion of Local Group activities.

The provinces are important to Nova Roma, because they help to facilitate contact between Nova Romans. I fully support active provinces, and local group activities. I believe as much support as possible should be given by the senate and magistrates to facilitate the establishment of more local groups. I believe Nova Roma should EMPOWER people to join together, and not require so much "red tape" it makes it impossible to organize into local groups.

As a citizen, and if elected Consul, I will encourage people to attend regional events, such as the Conventus in Europe, and I will work to create such an event in the United States.

Local groups are very important to the life of any organization, and Nova Roma should support the existing local groups, and encourage the foundation of new ones.

Encouraging citizens to become involved in the work of government.

Nova Roma needs a steady influx of new citizens. As our current citizens rise through the cursus honorum there will need to be new citizens to take their place. In order for Nova Roma to be a thriving organization we will need our citizens to get involved. I believe in supporting citizens to become active. If elected Consul I will support new citizens, as well as established ones within my consular staff to help some new citizens get a grasp of our process. If you want to be involved, you will only need to ask.
